Welcome back to our Galapagos trip blog! In this post, we will share the highlights of our visit to Fundacion Darwin, along with our reflections on the conclusion of our expedition. It has been an incredible journey, filled with fascinating discoveries and unforgettable experiences.
Discovering Fundacion Darwin: One afternoon, Luis and Marta had the opportunity to visit Fundacion Darwin, where Jaime had worked several years ago. Their curiosity was piqued, and they were especially excited to see how the turtles were being cared for, including the chance to meet George, the legendary giant tortoise.
Exploring the Foundation: The visit began with a stop at the foundation's shop, where they made purchases to support the ongoing research and conservation efforts. T-shirts and books in hand, they proceeded to explore the exhibition area, which provided valuable insights into the foundation's activities.
The Turtle Route: Next on the agenda was the "turtle route," a highly anticipated experience. Despite a close call with timing, they managed to join the tour. The team at Fundacion Darwin showcased their turtle breeding program, sharing intriguing facts about the biology and unique characteristics of these magnificent creatures. Turtles from different species were being bred for reintroduction to their original habitats on various islands. The visit concluded with the rare privilege of viewing the embalmed George. To maintain the turtle's tissues in pristine condition, visitors had to pass through a cooling chamber to regulate the temperature before entering the room where George was kept.
Captivating Sights and Farewell: On their way back, Luis and Marta had the opportunity to observe marine iguanas congregating to regulate their body temperature. They also took a moment to admire the picturesque beaches near the Darwin Foundation. The experience was a privilege, allowing them to witness firsthand the remarkable work being done at this iconic place for biologists.
