After three long years of anticipation and numerous delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we are thrilled to announce that our sampling campaign in the Galapagos Islands is finally underway. Our team has gathered in Quito, Ecuador, and despite the early morning start at 3:30 am, we were determined to make the most of this incredible opportunity.
One of the first tasks on our agenda was obtaining the necessary permits to legally enter the islands. We made our way to the quiosque of the "Consejo de Gobierno del régimen especial de Galápagos" to acquire the coveted "certificado de transeunte." This document would grant us permission to explore and conduct our research in this pristine and unique ecosystem.
After completing the permit formalities, we embarked on a short flight with a stopover in Guayaquil. Finally, at 9:00 am, we arrived at our destination: Baltra. The moment we stepped off the plane, we were greeted by a breathtakingly beautiful landscape that instantly reaffirmed why the Galapagos Islands are regarded as a natural wonder of the world.
We hopped onto a waiting bus and embarked on a short but memorable journey to our accommodation. Along the way, we couldn't resist capturing the picturesque views with our cameras. The Galapagos Islands truly live up to their reputation, boasting an abundance of diverse flora and fauna that has captivated the imaginations of scientists and nature enthusiasts for centuries.
During our stay, we had the privilege of enjoying lunch with Jaime Ortiz-Pachar, a Galapeno who graciously welcomed us into his home. Jaime's warmth and hospitality made us feel like part of the local community, and we were able to gain invaluable insights into the unique culture and way of life on the islands.
As scientists, our sampling campaign in the Galapagos Islands is not only a chance to marvel at the wonders of nature but also an opportunity to contribute to the ongoing efforts in conservation and preservation. Through our research and data collection, we hope to shed light on the delicate balance of this unique ecosystem and aid in its protection for generations to come.
Stay tuned for more updates from our sampling campaign in the Galapagos Islands as we delve deeper into this mesmerizing world of biodiversity and discovery.
