Welcome back to our Galapagos trip blog! On day 5 of our expedition, we dived deeper into the fascinating world of earthworms. From informative presentations to hands-on classification exercises, it was a day filled with learning, exploration, and, of course, mouthwatering culinary delights.

Morning Session: After a night of savouring the delicious cazuela de marisco, we kicked off the second day of our workshop with an enlightening session on the biology and ecology of earthworms, led by Marta. The participants discovered the beneficial effects of earthworms as ecosystem engineers and learned about their remarkable adaptations to various environmental conditions.

Morphological Identification and Genetic Barcoding: Marta also delved into the importance of morphological characters for accurate identification. This knowledge was crucial for the participants to sort the samples they had collected the previous day. Furthermore, Luis emphasized the significance of genetic barcoding in capturing the full diversity of these seemingly simple organisms. Molecular markers were highlighted as the perfect complement to morphological identification.

Classification and Morphotypes: After a rejuvenating coffee break, the participants began classifying their samples into juveniles and adults. They then further categorized the adults into different morphotypes: Pontoscolex corethrurus (an exotic species originating from South America), Megascolecids (a group of exotic species from Asia), and "others" that required further exploration for proper identification.

Lunchtime Delight: To refuel for the afternoon activities, we indulged in a delectable lunch of ceviche, a dish consisting of marinated fish. The fresh flavours revitalized our senses, preparing us for the exciting tasks ahead.

Dissection and Anatomy Exploration: After lunch, we continued our sample classification and embarked on a dissection journey to explore the internal anatomy of the earthworms we had found. This hands-on experience provided invaluable insights into the intricate workings of these remarkable creatures.

Reviewing the Knowledge: As the day drew to a close, we conducted a comprehensive review of the main morphological characters, reinforcing the knowledge gained by the participants throughout the day. It was a chance to solidify their understanding and ensure a firm grasp of the subject matter.

Celebrating a Fruitful Day: After a productive and enlightening day, the team decided to unwind and celebrate their achievements. They enjoyed caipirinhas and refreshing juices with a breathtaking sea view. The day concluded with a mouthwatering meal prepared by Jaime's aunt, creating lasting memories and fostering camaraderie among the team.

Conclusion: Day 5 of our Galapagos adventure was a captivating exploration of earthworm biology, classification, and anatomy. Through presentations, hands-on activities, and moments of scientific reflection, we deepened our understanding of these fascinating creatures. With each passing day, our appreciation for the unique ecosystems of the Galapagos Islands grows stronger, and we eagerly look forward to the adventures that await us in the days to come.

Join Us for More Adventures: Stay tuned for our next blog post as we approach the end of our journey through the enchanting Galapagos Islands, unravelling the secrets of its diverse flora and fauna.
